Research by the Gas Safety Register highlights the dangers of employing unregistered gas engineers
It's shocking to think that almost five million people in the UK are putting themselves and their families at risk by employing illegal gas engineers who aren't properly qualified to do the job.
Recent figures based on research by the Gas Safety Register, following four years of investigations into unqualified and unregistered gas fitters, showed that 65% of jobs carried out by illegal fitters were unsafe and that one in five of the appliances they fitted were so dangerous that immediate disconnection was required.
New IGEM document replaces Gas Safe Register’s GUISP
This month (March 2018), Gas Safe Register has withdrawn Edition 7.1 of The Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure (GUISP), setting out procedures for visual risk assessments of gas appliances. It has been replaced by a new document published by the Institute of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) called IGEM/G/11.

The Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) has been selected to carry out the audit that will standardise the quality of gas industry training for new entrants.
Changes to pre-entry requirements for ACS. Are you up to speed?
In order to improve safety standards and training provision the ACS Strategic Management Board has updated the ACS entry requirements for both new entrants and experienced engineers wishing to extend their qualifications. The changes are set out in Guidance Note 8 (GN8) and came into effect on 1st October.
Important updates to ACS regulations and codes of practice
At the end of 2018 there were some important updates to domestic ACS assessments covering changes to the Gas Safety Regulations and standards. In addition, the guidance to the ACS scheme rules have been amended and now stipulate that newly qualified learners need to gain at least 6 months’ experience on the Gas Safe Register before they extend or the scope of their professional work.
