Logic Certification has launched a new biomass heating course, to help installers take advantage of the increased market demand in-light of the Domestic RHI and the general start of the heating season. Focusing on pellet-burning appliances, the new, limited-scope qualification will allow heating and plumbing engineers who don’t deal with logs or chips to choose a course most relevant to their business needs.
The Level 3 Award in the Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Wood Pellet Burning Appliances, covers the type of biomass fuel likely to be most popular with homeowners. Pellets take-up less space, are cleaner burning and more usually associated with automated boilers, providing end users with a heating experience more akin to natural gas.
Mark Krull, director at Logic Certification explained: “With pellets the most popular biomass heating choice, we felt that launching a pellet-only course would be useful for installers who don’t get involved with log or chip boilers. The new QCF programme allows eligible candidates to learn the skills relevant to their business, rather than training in areas that don’t apply to them.
“This approach of considering the needs of actual installers follows in the footsteps of our Air Source only heat pump course, which we launched earlier in the year. We appreciate that our customers have limited time available, so have devised training programmes to specifically match the requirements of their business.”
Recognised by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), the course covers the installation, commissioning and maintenance of wood pellet appliances, including:
- Assessing suitability of chimneys and flues systems
- Diagnosis and rectification of faults
- Compliance with manufacturers’ instructions and related standards
- Specifying the correct type of wood burner for a particular property
- Understanding the combustion process and principles of safe combustion
The course is available to experienced heating and plumbing engineers. Candidates must Gas Safe Registered, OFTEC approved or hold an N/SVQ in either plumbing, heating and ventilating, oil-fired technical services, gas installation and maintenance, JIB-PMES/CSCS card, Engineering Services SKILL card or approved equivalent working experience, plus a current recognised qualification in Water Regulations and Energy Efficiency.
