Leading the smart meter revolution

With power and gas suppliers preparing to roll out Smart Meters, ensuring the government’s 2020 targets are met, Utilities Academy, one of the UK’s leading providers of Smart Meter training, has become the first centre approved by Logic Certification to deliver its new dual fuel Smart Meter Diploma. The course covers both gas and electricity, plus the vitally important customer-facing skills that will help end users understand this new technology and change their energy usage to reduce consumption.

“Currently, there is a shortage of qualified Smart Meter engineers and with demand growing week by week, suitably trained installers are certain to be in regular employment for years to come”, said Steve Mulvany, scheme director for Logic Certification.

“The Utilities Academy’s facilities are extremely impressive, with its staff demonstrating high levels of knowledge and commitment when it comes to smart meter training and developing this burgeoning industry. Their comprehensive training covers not only the key practical skills but also the customer handling and soft skills so important for their clients.” Steve concluded.

Paul Butner, Utilities Academy Manager added, “our aim is to ensure the industry has smart meter engineers with the skills they need now and for the future and the Logic certification will help us to do this. As the first Logic Certification approved assessment centre for smart meter training we have added credibility to what we can provide our future trainees - first-class smart meter training.”

About the qualification

Logic Certification’s Smart Meter Diploma (QCF Level 2) is for candidates that are new to the industry and wish to learn how to install and exchange gas and/or power Smart Meters in domestic dwellings. Training is also suitable for existing installers looking to up-skill into a new industry sector.

The course covers the fundamental principles of installing and exchanging Smart Meters, end user training and handover, plus on-site work experience with a competent and experienced smart meter installer. By training through the Utilities Academy, installers will have access to work experience with a power supplier or OAMI* registered gas installation business.

Engineers completing the electrical element of the Smart Meter qualification will be able to apply for authorisation from a Power Supplier to install meters, those holding the gas qualification are eligible to register with Gas Safe Register.
