Gas Safety in the Social Housing Sector

We all recognise the importance of gas safety in the social housing sector, as the potential for things to go wrong is all too real. Current legislation, known as Regulation 36, requires landlords of local authority housing, housing associations and co-operatives to protect their tenants in just the same way as those renting in the private sector.

Regulation 36

All landlords are required, by law, to employ a Gas Safe registered installer to undertake annual safety checks on all gas appliances and flues within their properties and to make sure that the all gas appliances/flues and installation pipework are maintained so that they work safely.

Logic Certification already provides a range of gas courses for those working in the social housing sector and has just launched two new courses at Level 3, in Gas Auditing to complete the set.

The Level 2 Award:  Gas Safety Awareness in Social Housing, is for non-technical staff who require a basic understanding and awareness of the technical aspects of gas. This course enables them to assist with enquiries from tenants and to understand terminology they may encounter in handling Landlord Gas Safety Records, repairs documentation and technical reports. The Level 4 Award: Gas Safety Management in Social Housing, is a course for Social Housing staff who manage or oversee work on gas appliances in order to give them a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of gas safety, this level 4 course is; an assessment based distance learning package leading to a nationally recognised RQF qualification accredited by Logic certification. These new Gas Auditing qualifications have been developed to offer the highest level of training in gas auditing and are only available through Logic Certification approved centres throughout the UK.

LCL Level 3 Award in Auditing of Gas Work

This qualification equips candidates with the knowledge to plan for and conduct audits. To identify incorrect, incomplete and unsafe work, understand current legislation and standards, and compile detailed reports following the audit.

LCL Level 3 Award in Auditing of a Gas Business's Work Management Procedures

This qualification covers the same areas as the Level 3 Award in Auditing of Gas Work and focuses on how these apply to an individual business' working practices. It looks at matters relating to staffing, including the procedure for recruiting gas operatives and how to monitor their performance. The qualification also covers the requirements for safety, training, qualifications and work allocation, covering both direct employees and sub-contractors.

Mark Krull, Director for Logic Certification, said: "Gas auditing is an essential part of keeping gas systems safe and operating efficiently; whether that's auditing the installations themselves or the companies delivering them. These two new qualifications complement the other LCL gas sector qualifications’
