Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure inspection begins 1 July 2016

The lead in period allowing businesses and engineers 12 months to update their procedures in line with Edition 7 of the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure (GIUSP) is soon to expire.

As from 1 July 2016, Gas Safe registered engineers and businesses will be inspected in line with the new edition of the guidelines, but are encouraged to adopt the revised procedure as soon as possible.

STA launches #KeepSolarThermal campaign

On the 21^st March 2016 the STA (Solar Trade Association) held an emergency meeting and decided to take a “strong approach” in rebutting the Government’s proposal to remove solar thermal from the RHI scheme.

The STA argue solar thermal has huge potential for the future, and have launched the #KeepSolarThermal campaign in order to gain support for the cause.

Logic Certification helps new academy get smart!

Logic Certification has joined forces with the UK’s leading provider of metering services, CH4 Services, helping the firm to become fully accredited to deliver its QCF Level 2 Diploma in Smart Metering Power.

The qualification was launched in response to an industry need to meet the demand for the installation of 50 million smart gas and electricity meters in 27 million homes by 2020. The launch of the smart metering academy now means that CH4 Services is able to directly address the gap within the sector for trained smart meter operatives, both increasing their existing workforce’s opportunities and opening up potential for new entrants.

STA packs a punch for industry in The House of Lords

Following The House of Lords clash over cuts to the feed-in tariff, the Solar Trade Association (STA) has made great gains for the FiT scheme, with key recommendations being taken on board and implemented.

Carbon Monoxide detector laws tightened in Scotland

Laws relating to carbon monoxide detectors in private rented accommodation have been tightened up in Scotland.

As from 1^st December 2015, Scottish landlords are required to install a CO detector in every space containing a fixed combustion appliance. In their Statutory Guidance the Scottish Government advise landlords that “combustion appliances such as boilers, fires, heaters and stoves fuelled by solid fuel, oil or gas all have the potential to cause CO poisoning if they are poorly installed or commissioned, inadequately maintained or incorrectly used.”

Part P: a must for building services installers in 2016

Part P was introduced on January 1^st 2005; a move by government to introduce electrical safety rules into Building Regulations for England and Wales, defining the minimum standards for electrical safety with a domestic premises.

Feed in Tariff review announced

Yesterday, (17^th December), DECC announced the details of its Feed in Tariff Scheme review, confirming that subsidies will be cut by 64%, a significant figure, but not quite as much as the 84% predicted. Under the new tariffs, there will be a 4.8% rate of return for solar, 5.9% for wind, and 9.2% for hydro.

STA lays out jobs losses for solar

Not quite the news we were hoping to hear: the Solar Trade Association (STA) claims that some 20,000 more jobs could be axed in the solar industry, as a result of proposed cuts to government subsidies; a slight improvement on the 27,000 jobs it had previously estimated.

Industry to champion new safety certificate for landlords

Thursday 10^th December has been earmarked as ‘The Private Rented Sector Safety Shocks’ event, held in Westminster, which will see representatives from across the public and private sectors come together to discuss improving safety in private rented housing.
