Heat Training Grant – what training providers need to know and how to apply

21 Mar 2023

On 2nd March 2023, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) announced its next round of funding to accelerate the heat pump roll out, including the Heat Training Grant, which will enable training providers to offer grants of up to £500 to candidates undertaking heat pump training courses.

Applications are now open for training providers who want to be part of the scheme.

What is the Heat Training Grant?

The new £5 million scheme will replace funding from the Home Decarbonisation Skills Training Competition, including the HITSS, which comes to an end on 31st March 2023.

Over the next two years, the Heat Training Grant will upskill 10,000 experienced installers to deliver low carbon heating systems, supporting the continuation of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Training providers who deliver LCL Awards heat pump courses have the opportunity to offer candidates up to £500 off the cost of upskilling. The grant should cover most of the cost of training, which takes around a week.

What LCL heat pump qualifications are eligible?

All our heat pump qualifications are regulated by Ofqual and deliver the Minimum Technical Competencies for heat pump installation.

LCL Awards centres who offer the following qualifications can apply to become a training provider and offer discounted training under the scheme:

How will the Heat Training Grant be paid?

The grant can either be presented to the trainee as a discount on the overall cost of training, or offered as a rebate on completion of training.

Once a training provider has been approved to offer the grant, they will be able to request a budget allocation. This will be estimated to last six months and will be based on trainee demand, previous delivery rates, demonstration of capability to scale up delivery and geographic location.
