LCL Awards and GTEC help SELECT deliver PV and EESS qualifications
02 May 2023
LCL Awards centre, GTEC, is the leading provider of our renewables qualifications in the UK. With a growing network of locations throughout the country, GTEC has the knowledge and experience to help other LCL Awards centres fast-track their own ‘green’ training offering; an area that is growing in popularity.
GTEC has recently provided this service at SELECT, Scotland’s trade association for the electrical contracting industry. SELECT is a not-for-profit organisation with around 1,250 members, delivering training courses to more than 3,500 electricians each year.
SELECT’s Training Manager, Jenny Cryans, has been working with GTEC’s MD, Griff Thomas, to set up LCL Awards Level 3 courses in Solar PV and Electrical Energy Storage Systems for the association’s members. GTEC can provide all the necessary equipment, including purpose-built test rigs used for the practical elements of the course.
Jenny said: “We have recently run two pilots for these courses to our membership and they’ve been a great success. From a personal point of view, it’s been great to see the courses finally being rolled out.
“We’ve spent a long time searching for the right solution for our members and judging from the feedback, LCL Awards and GTEC certainly seem to have ticked all the right boxes.”
Griff added: “GTEC is delighted to help SELECT set-up solar pv and battery storage courses. More and more consumers are looking for low carbon and cost-effective ways to generate their own electricity. Rising energy prices and uncertainty of supply have really fuelled demand for photovoltaics in recent years. When combined with a battery, end-users can get closer to an ‘off-grid’ scenario and make significant savings on their electricity bills.”
About the qualifications:
LCL Awards Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Small Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems: Covering design, installation and commissioning, this qualification provides electricians with detailed explanations and practical examples of the applicable regulations and guidance relating to solar pv, giving learners background to market and grant funding routes including the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).
LCL Awards Level 3 Award in the Design, Installation and Commissioning of Electrical Energy Storage Systems: The EES qualification looks at the installation of dedicated energy storage batteries in accordance with the IET Code of Practice. It covers theoretical and practical knowledge of enabling learners to apply the relevant regulations and guidance in safely installing units before handover.
Mark Krull, Director of LCL Awards said: “I am very pleased that GTEC has set up renewables training at SELECT and that it can now offer its members two of our renewables qualifications. Griff was an advisor when we designed these courses, so he knows them inside out and is fully equipped to oversee their set-up in our approved centres.
“There’s a growing demand for renewables training and LCL Awards is pleased to be able to help our centres in delivering our low carbon heating qualifications.”
