BEIS Future of Heat Consultation installer views needed

The Department of Business, Energy & Industrial strategy (BEIS) released a new consultation last week looking at how boiler installation regulations could be improved. 

With the help of the Heating & Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC), BEIS are hoping to engage directly with installers through a short and easy-to-complete survey.

Landlords need to take responsibility for tenant gas safety

New research from Gas Safe Register suggests that landlords’ unawareness of their gas safety responsibilities could be putting 2.7 million renters at risk. 

The data, which was gathered over a period of 5 years, found that more than a third (37%) of landlords do not realise that it is their responsibility to ensure that that gas appliances provided by them are safety checked every year by a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.  In fact, one-in-seven landlords (15%) wrongly believe that gas appliance safety is the responsibility of their local council.

HSE shows support for MOT style gas safety certificates

Since the launch of its Gas Access Campaign back in November 2013, the Association for Gas Safety Managers (AGSM) has lobbied to raise awareness of the benefits of moving to an MOT style of Landlord’s Gas Safety Record (LGSR) as well as calling on the government to beef up legal powers allowing social landlords better access to their properties to carry out gas safety checks.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have now put their weight behind the campaign, initiating a comprehensive consultation process on all aspects of the change.

DECC scrapped, what effect will it have on the renewables industry?

New Prime Minister, Theresa May, has scrapped the Department of Energy and Climate Change as part of a major cabinet reshuffle.

It was announced on Thursday that energy policy will now be decided by the newly-created Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, headed up by Greg Clark – Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.  The new department will be responsible for delivering industrial strategy, business relations, furthering the UK’s science base, delivering affordable, clean energy and tackling climate change.

New Wiring Regulation to protect end users from fire

On 1 January 2016, Regulation 421.1.201 (PROTECTION AGAINST FIRE CAUSED BY ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT) came into full effect in England.

The new regulation is one of a number of changes following the implementation of the Third Amendment to BS 7671: 2008, The IET Wiring Regulations.
